So You Want to Start Crocheting? Here’s the Easiest Way

So You Want to Start Crocheting? Here’s the Easiest Way

If you’ve ever thought about learning to crochet, but felt overwhelmed (“it looks complicated… what if I mess up…”), I’m here to tell you —
It’s actually really easy to start.

Yes, really.
And I say this as someone with very little patience, zero crafting talent, and the attention span of… well, a baby cat watching dust float in the sun.

So trust me —
If I can do it, you can definitely do it.

🌿 1) Start with a goal — anything you want to make

Your first project doesn’t have to be fancy.
Pick something you actually want to use — like a:

  • Beanie

  • Bag

  • Basket

It’s easier to stay motivated when you’re excited about the final product.

🎥 2) Find a good tutorial video

You don’t need to memorize terms or learn theory first.
Just find a detailed YouTube tutorial (I recommend ~1 hour long).
These long videos usually walk you through every stitch slowly, so you can follow step by step without getting lost.

Play → follow → pause → repeat.
That’s it.

That’s how I learned…
I didn’t even know what “single crochet” or “double crochet” meant — I just followed the video, and somehow it worked.
You learn while making.
It’s the best way.

🧶 3) Pick the right yarn to start: go chunky!

For beginners, I strongly recommend thick yarn (T-shirt yarn).

Why?

  • Easier to see where to insert the hook

  • Works up faster → more motivation

  • Quick results = big confidence boost

  • Great for baskets, bags, hats

Thin yarns like mohair are beautiful, but harder to see clearly.
So leave them for later — you’ll thank yourself.

🪝 4) Get the basic supplies

Don’t overthink tools — you only need a few things:

✅ Yarn
✅ Hook
✅ Stitch markers
✅ Yarn needle

Some shops include little tools for free —
mine does ;)

And if you spend $79+ on babatata.com,
Free shipping + I’ll send you a FREE crochet hook 🎁

Just leave a note at checkout with the hook size you want.
No note?
I’ll send a surprise size for you — could be fun ;)

🚀 5) Just follow the video — seriously

Don’t worry about whether you’re “doing it right.”
Don’t worry about being slow.
Just follow the video one stitch at a time.

The goal isn’t perfection —
it’s finishing the thing you decided to make.

And you will.

You’ll learn the basics along the way, without even trying:

  • Where to insert your hook

  • Tension

  • Single / double crochet

  • Turning

  • Finishing

It just happens.

☁️ 6) You’ll enter the “flow state”…

If you’ve seen the 2024 Brad Pitt F1 movie,
you know that feeling when everything goes quiet
and you just… sink into the moment.

Crocheting feels like that.
No phone scrolling.
No noise.
Just hands + yarn + peace.

It’s addicting — in the good, soul-nourishing way.

🎉 7) The moment you finish? Pure joy.

Your first piece might be uneven.
Crooked.
A little funny looking.
(Trust me — mine were.)

But you made it.
With your hands.
And that feeling is… ridiculously good.

Useful things are even better —
I personally love making bags + hats,
since I can actually use them every day.
Seeing something you made become part of your life
is the best motivation to keep going.

💬 Real talk

The only “wrong” way to start crocheting
is to keep thinking about it without trying.

Just:

  1. Pick a tutorial

  2. Get materials

  3. Follow along

That’s it.

You can absolutely do this.
If someone as impatient + clumsy as me can fall in love with crochet,
you might surprise yourself too.
